If you have an illuminated check engine light on the dashboard that will turn off, Rick’s Auto Center advises that there is something wrong in the engine. A recent study proved that the check engine light is extremely accurate in alerting drivers of engine trouble. Below is a list of parts that will cause an illuminated check engine light if they malfunction.
Catalytic Converter
The catalytic converter is a common reason why the check engine light turns on. If your vehicle is 10 years old or older, it’s possible that the converter is clogged and malfunctioning. Unfortunately, there is no way to repair the converter. We must replace it.
EVAP Control System
Your vehicle is also equipped with an EVAP control system that monitors fuel evaporation and prevents it. If the system goes bad, the check engine light will turn on. We can run a diagnostic check to find out why you have an illuminated check engine light.
Engine Control Unit
The engine control unit or module is the part that turns on the check engine light. Oddly, it will turn it on if it malfunctions, as well. Aside from the dashboard warning, another sign that the unit has gone bad is your engine cutting and refusing to restart.
Fuel Tank Cap
The fuel cap over the tank also prevents fuel from evaporating out of your automobile. This cap creates a vacuum seal, which is why you hear a whoosh when you unscrew it. If it has not been replaced tightly or is no longer able to seal the tank, the check engine light will turn on.
Faulty Sensors
There are two sensors in your automobile that can also generate a check engine warning when they go bad. These sensors are the mass airflow sensor and the oxygen sensor. Usually, the mass airflow sensor needs to be cleaned and the oxygen sensor needs to be replaced.
Spark Plugs
If it is time to replace your spark plugs yet you ignore the service, the check engine light may come on. The worn plugs will also misfire and cause your engine to stall frequently.
Transmission
You may also have a steady check engine light on the dashboard if the transmission is going bad. You would think that the transmission would have its own light, but it doesn’t. Rather, the engine control unit turns on the check engine light.
Finally, Rick’s Auto Center in Hamden, CT, advises that the check engine light can also turn on if your engine has a vacuum leak. Stop by our shop today for a diagnostic test.
